MS13-036 (KB2823324) Windows Kernel-Mode NTFS Drivers

Disclosed April 11, 2013    Fully Patched

Vulnerability Description:

Microsoft Windows contains a vulnerability that may allow an attacker to elevate their privileges to that of the kernel, by leveraging a NULL pointer derefence within the kernel-mode NTFS driver. To successfully exploit this vulnerability, an attacker must craft a malicious NTFS drive and mount it on a vulnerable target machine. This issue is normally only exploitable for local users running as administrator as administrators are the only user group that can mount an NTFS drive. However, a non-administrator may mount an NTFS volume via removable drive, which does not require privilege elevation. KB2823324 that addressed this issue, included in MS13-036, was pulled due to fatal errors occuring as a result of an incompatability.
